THIS year's Heritage Open Days event is coming up and among those celebrating England’s biggest festival of history and culture is Swarthmoor Hall.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, September 17-18, those who go along to the 17th century hall near Ulverston can ask for a free audio tour (normally £6.50), which takes 35-45 minutes and tells the dramatic historical story of the original inhabitants of the hall, Thomas and Margaret Fell. The tour covers the Fell's role in the establishment of Quakerism and of religious toleration in UK and USA. Guides will also be available to take groups around the hall and answer questions.
There are six rooms to explore, furnished with 17th century furniture, books and fabrics and children and adults can dress in 17th century costumes in the attic. The hall's gardens, wildflower meadow and labyrinth are always free to wander around, and refreshments will be available at its popular Barn Cafe.
Meanwhile, Swarthmoor Hall always welcomes new volunteers, who are interested in history and Quakers, to train as occasional tour guides. For further information telephone Clare Dent on 01229-583204.
