THE war years in Furness, lifeboats and the story of a canal feature in the autumn programme of talks by Barrow Civic and Local History Society.

All the meetings are at 2pm in the Trinity Church Centre, off Abbey Road, Barrow, and everyone is welcome.

The series starts on Friday, September 27, when The Mail’s nostalgia writer Bill Myers will give an illustrated presentation on Furness Women on the Home Front in the Second World War.

It will include a look at everything from nursing and voluntary service to new roles for women in the shipyard and women killed in the Barrow Blitz in 1941.

On Friday, October 25, lifeboat operations manager John Falvey will give a lecture on the RNLI in Barrow.

Colin Smith is the speaker on Friday, November 29, with the topic Ulverston Canal – Past, Present and Future.
