THE unusual topic of corpse roads features in a Thursday, September 19, lecture by the Askam and Ireleth Local History Society.
Guest speaker is Alan Cleaver, who wrote The Corpse Roads of Cumbria with Lesley Park.
It starts at 7.3pm in the Duddon Road Methodist Church, Askam, and all are welcome.
Paths, lonnings and other ancient trackways criss-cross the county.
They include corpse roads at places such as Cartmel, Beetham, Grasmere, Loweswater, Keswick, Shap, Greystoke and Garrigill.
These routes were used until the 18 th Century to transport coffins from remote villages to the 'mother' church - often many miles away.
