Welcome back for another instalment of 'pawesome' news from the zoo!

Planning is currently underway for our October half term events so this week we bring you two heartwarming updates of the feathered variety!

In May we reported the sad rejection of a Coscoroban Swan Cygnet by his mum at only two weeks old. The Cygnet was being cared for by staff here at the zoo who took him on regular “walks” where he would follow his human friends through the World Wide Safari.

This week we are thrilled to say he is doing amazingly well, and has his very own name. Everyone say a big hello to Sherbert! Sherbert spent a few weeks being looked after by humans, gaining the strength and becoming the size he needed to be able to protect himself from larger birds before moving to the Tambopata Aviary.

Here he has settled in nicely amongst the other residents, said hello to many a visitor (more often than not blocking the path through).

He has very few of his grey baby feathers left now as you will see. Keepers are confident he is more than likely a “he” due to his size – in time a feather test will confirm this – and he has a Coscoroban friend (who some of us like to call 'Dib Dab' as they always come as a pair).

Readers will also remember the whap whap of wee webbed feet back in early June with the arrival of Humboldt Penguin chick named Anfield in honour of Liverpool’s win in Madrid.

This week we caught up with penguin keeper Bronwyn, Anfield and his 'brother from another mother' Origi (if you know, you know) for a general health check and to microchip and ID band them now they are a good size.

We generally give penguins a visible colour coded ID band in addition to their microchips to help with visual identification, Anfield is 'Green Left, Green Right' and Origi 'Green Left, Yellow Right'.

Both are eating fish of their own accord now and will 'Never Waddle Alone'.
