Around 450 homes were left without power for nearly 16 hours in Workington on Sunday.

The properties in the Hunday Court area of the town had no electricity from 12.20pm on Sunday, until around 4am the following morning.

One man, who did not want to be named, said his ex-partner was left struggling with their six-month-old baby.

She had to go to her friend's house in Seaton to sterilize her baby's bottles.

The woman also had medication for her baby which she needed to store in the fridge.

"I think it's a joke that it was off that long," the man said.

"I have never known properties being without power for so long."

He said there are also a number of elderly residents living on the estate.

"I would hate it if that was my grandparents," he added.

A spokesperson from Electricity North West said: “We received reports of a power cut affecting 445 customers in Workington at 12:20pm on Sunday. Engineers attended site and were able to restore power to all customers by 3:14pm.

“Shortly after, for safety reasons, we had to take customers off supply after discovering a fault in the network. We worked closely with residents and kept them up to date whilst our engineers worked hard to resolve the issue and at 3:41am on Monday morning, all customers were back on supply.

“If anyone needs any more information during a power cut, they can follow Electricity North West on Twitter or Facebook for updates, see our live power cut map at www.enwl.co.uk, or call us free on 105.”
