PARENTS and children enjoyed a day in the sun for a special Family Fun Day at Barrow Raiders.

The laughs and cheers could be heard across the ground and children ran around and got stuck in to the host of activities on offer.

There was a number of inflatable obstacle course and slides, as well as other fun fair ground games like hook a duck and tombola.

The event was organised by CancerCare and Barrow Raiders in an effort to fundraise for the charity as well as raise awareness for the work this charity does to support those affected by cancer and other life limiting conditions in Furness and the Morecambe Bay area.

Rachel Minshull, Development Officer for CancerCare Barrow said:: “Today’s event is about fundraising to allow us to continue to help people affected by cancer and other life limiting condition, but it is also about raising awareness for CancerCare and getting the word out about what exactly we do for people in the area.

“We’re still very new here so we want to let people know what we do.

“We currently run a centre out of Trinity Church here in Barrow.

“There we offer one on one holistic therapy.

“This includes counselling, hypnotherapy, massages, a dietitian as well as other therapies.

“We also run group therapy sessions.

“We run a number of weekly groups including palates, as well as swimming at Nuffield.

“Recently we started a mindfulness session.”

CancerCare relies heavily on fundraising to allow them to continue providing the support they do currently.

Ms Minshull said: “We need events like this to raise funds.

“Each year CancerCare needs to bring in around £1,000,000 a year.

“We don’t get any government funding.

“We do get some funding through the NHS Trust, but predominantly we fund ourselves through grants, funds and fundraising.

“So donations from this kind of event are vitally important.

“But equally, events like this get our name out and get more people the help they need.”
