THE reason behind the large number of emergency services at Cavendish Dock on Thursday night has been revealed.

A multi-agency training session took place at the dock with police, ambulance, British Transport Police and firefighters all on the scene at the railway line.

Emergency services on the night reassured residents that there was no cause for concern.

Pictures shared by police showed crews dealing with ‘casualties’ after a car was hit by a train.

Ian Westall, watch manager at Ulverston fire station, said: “The training session was a multi-agency exercise.

“It was a simulated rail incident involving two vehicles and multiple casualties.

“The exercise was designed to test the abilities of all of the emergency services teams to work together during a major incident.

“Managers from each of the organisations involved had to come together and share information and communicate effectively in order to ensure a joint understanding of the risk involved and make sure everyone knew what was going on throughout.

“The aim is that we are able to work better as generally during large incidents such as this we come in large number and we need to cooperate well.”

Speaking more about how the training went, watch manager Westall said: “I think the training went well from everyone’s point of view.

“From the training we will be able to work out where we can improve for the future, but I think it went extremely well.”
