THE historic tradition of rushbearing will celebrate its 115th year on Sunday September 29 in the streets of Urswick.

The parade will begin at 1pm from Low Furness CE Primary School and will be led by rush queen, Daisy O’Keeffe. The parade will arrive at the ceremonial Rushbearing at the church of St Mary & St Michael, where the old rushes are replaced with new ones, laid by the schoolchildren of the village.

It will finally come to a halt back at the school, where visitors can enjoy refreshments and gingerbread.

Nicola Troughton, a teacher at the school, and Urswick resident of 33 years will be organising this year’s event, said: “I’ve been running the event for three years now and it’s a joy to see the community getting together and enjoying this wonderful tradition. The children are all so excited.”
