IT is 32 years this week since Diana, Princess of Wales, met crowds in Ulverston as she officially opened an extension to the town's Abbeyfield House.

On September 10 in 1987 she unveiled a plaque and took time to chat with people waiting to see her arrive by car in Victoria Road.

The Mail noted: "Spectators lined up 10-deep facing Abbeyfield House as children from dozens of Furness schools took up their positions.

"Many of them waved Union Jacks and flags they had mad eat school."

Among those to shake her hand was pensioner Emily Molyneux,of Swarthmoor.

Abbeyfield House resident Catherine Moscrop was chosen to present the princess with a posy of flowers.

The Mail, on Tuesday, June 27 in 2005 recorded celebrations by staff, volunteers and the 15 residents at Ulverston to mark the 50thanniversary of Abbeyfield - which had opened houses throughout the United Kingdom.
