A TRADITIONAL festival returned for another year.

People packed out Ulverston town centre for the annual Charter Day celebrations.

The day was filled with a host a fun activities for the whole family.

These included face-painting, coconut shy, balloon modelling, lantern making and arts and crafts.

Ulverston Town Band also treated people to music as they provided the soundtrack to celebrations.

Children's characters Rapunzel, Spiderman and Elsa were also in attendance.

Plenty was on offer in the wide range of stalls.

A family dog competition also made up the events on the day.

For the past three decades, Ulverston Town Council has held an annual celebration to commemorate the awarding of a charter by King Edward I in 1280 allowing it to hold markets.

The market day was to be on Thursday and there was permission for an annual fair from September 7 to 9.

There had been attempts at the end of the 12th century to develop an urban settlement at Ulverston by landowner Gilbert Fitz-Reinhard.

In 1283 the abbot of Furness is said to have objected to Ulverston market due to its effect on Dalton.

A Scottish raid in 1322 by soldiers of Robert the Bruce set back the development of the town.

The next event of Ulverston's busy calendar of entertainment is the Lantern Festival, which takes place on Saturday evening.

A parade of decorated lanterns will go through the town centre from 7.30pm arriving in County Square for 8.30pm.
