A CAR park is off-limits to drivers for a fourth day after a wood-cutting project came to a halt with two trees left standing.

Contractors cut down all but the smallest two trees surrounding the car park at Lord Street, Millom, by Tuesday afternoon.

Some of the resulting tangle of branches has been removed but the rest was still covering the car park on Thursday afternoon.

The project was due to be completed on Tuesday.

Copeland Borough Council had distributed letters noting: “Please note that the trees are being removed from the Lord Street car park, with the work raking place on Monday and Tuesday.

“Please ensure that all cars, caravans, trailers and any other vehicle are removed from the car park by 8am on each day.

“Any vehicles left in the car park are at the owners’ risk for the duration of the work.”

Some of the trees will be close to 30 years old and were planted when the car park was created on a housing clearance site.

No reason was given in the council letter for the removal of the trees.
