A SOCIAL club with roots stretching back 100 years is hosting a traditional flower, vegetable and baking show on Sunday, August 25.

To mark the event at Haverigg Working Mens Club we are taking a look at archive picture from The Mail in 1999.

This year’s show, at the Main Street club building, is open for entries from 11am, with judging from 1pm to 2pm and an auction at 3pm.

The Millom News on June 9 in 1967, noted: “In 1919 a small band of men decided to open their own working men’s club in Haverigg and they took over some rather derelict property, which consisted of two rooms and a bar.”

In 1936 the club was given a major extension at the back and in 1947 took its members to Wembley for the 1947 Rugby League Challenge Cup Final for a total cost of £1,000.

There was another major revamp of the club in 1967 and on the opening night a pint of beer was sixpence.
