THIS was my second visit to the charming and relaxed Caffé Riva based on St Martins Square in Bowness.

From what I remember from my first visit I wasn't overwhelmingly impressed, but when you are looking for a welcome retreat from the often hectic, tourist filled streets of Bowness Caffé Riva is perfect.

Last time I sat inside but with a clear sky and warm breeze I could not resist sitting outside. Upon arrival I would admit that I wished the staff would have been more attentive, as we were not too sure whether we had to order inside or whether they would come out to us.

After asking inside they clarified that they would come out to me, but I had to place an order inside.

When we got our menu my eyes quickly found their special lunch time offer which provided a selection of pizzas and paninis for £7.95.

I quickly chose the Tris pizza which included tomato, trio of salami Napoli, Milano, Spinata, fresh chilli and mozzarella accompanied by a side of French fries and a dark porter called Dog’th Vader from Windermere Brewery.

My companion chose the Polpette panini which included classic meatballs, tomato and mozzarella with a side of French fries.

I must admit that when it first came I was slightly surprised. The pizza itself seemed small and overly charred with much of the crust turned black. Now I love a bit of smokiness and some charring but not so much that nearly the whole crust is black.

However, when I tucked in the charring was actually very slight and the dough still soft.

Honestly it was lovely. The smokiness of dough matched with the salt of salami Napoli was such a good combination. All this matched with a dark porter, again with its own smokiness was perfect.

My companion's food was slightly less impressive and despite looking very presentable the meatballs lacked seasoning and the texture was too soft for me.

In total everything cost just under £30 which is pretty good going as I know some of the other restaurants in Bowness can be a little steep.

Overall, I would really recommend Caffé Riva, particularly for families or anyone wanting a relaxed and tasty meal.
