A TEAM of volunteers has joined forces with the Furness MP to create a night cafe for the homeless community.

A group of young people on National Citizen Service (NCS), which is delivered by Inspira, have dedicated their social action to raising awareness about homelessness and mental health by supporting the Furness Refugee Support.

Independent MP for Barrow, John Woodcock helped support the project by offering the team his office space for a night cafe.

The cafe, which will be open on August 29 from 6pm to 1-2am, will offer tea, coffee, hot chocolate and toast to the homeless.

Mr Woodcock said: “The students taking part in this year’s National Citizens Service have come up with some interesting social action programmes that will have direct and lasting benefits to our community and they have been brilliantly supported by staff from Inspira – Barrow’s career management and personal development organisation.

“The team has a workable idea to raise awareness about homelessness and mental health by joining forces with Furness Refugee Support."

Kayla Wager, one of the team members on NCS said: "We've spent the last four weeks getting to know each other, pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones and working together as a team.

"We’ve chosen to support Furness Refugee Support because there are five families in Barrow and two families in Ulverston who've been saved from war torn countries and from being homeless so we want to help others like them and raise awareness of homelessness in our community."
