People in Barrow are being urged to vote in a competition which could result in the town receiving £15,000 to spend on a community event.

At the start of July, Barrow Business Improvement District entered the town into the Great British High Street Competition, Rising Star category.

The competition sees towns from across the British Isles compete to win £15,000 towards a community project or event to be staged in the winning town centre.

A judging panel from the Great British High Street competition will visit the town at the end of August and look over the projects, initiatives and events listed in Barrow’s application.

The judging panel’s score will account for 80 per cent of the total marks, with 20 per cent coming from a community vote.

If Barrow is successful Barrow BID says it will put together a shortlist of projects and events and ask the community to vote on how they would like the money to be spent.

BID manager Colin Garnett said: “The awards recognise the efforts that BID teams and their partners put in to regenerate and transform their town centre.

"At Barrow BID we are really proud of our achievements over the past 12 months, we feel our programme of events have attracted locals and visitors to the town and we have delivered a number of initiatives and projects which have increased pride in the town.”
