A LORRY belonging to a Barrow company struck a bridge causing traffic chaos in Kendal.

Parkside Road was closed and blocked both ways following the incident this morning, leading to severe congesiton from Valley Drive to the A684 Singleton Park Road.

However, it has now re-opened in both directions.

Pictures from the scene show the lorry belongs to J.J.C Hire Ltd.

A spokesperson from Cumbria County Council said: "The bridge is owned by Network Rail and is on the Oxenholme to Windermere line."

It is understood Network Rail carried out a safety inspection on the bridge before a decision was made to re-open the road.
