A YOUNG woman from Barrow is set to head across the pond to compete in the World Strongwomen championships.

Amelia Haigh, 25, has been invited to compete in the Official Strongman Games: Worlds Strongest Woman 2019.

Miss Haigh was named the fifth strongest woman in Europe at the official Strongman Games European championships this month.

She is now hoping to travel to Daytona Beach, Florida, to compete in the Worlds Strongest Woman 2019 in November.

Despite only been training to compete in Strongwomen competitions for around a year, Miss Haigh has been successful at a European level and is now ready to give it her all on the world stage.

Speaking more about how she got in to Strongwomen Competitions, she said: “I started going to Cumbria Strength & Conditioning in Dalton.

“I did a strongwoman taster session and found out I was actually quite strong.”

She met her coach, Rhiannon Lovelace, in July 2018.

She encouraged her to compete more.

She said: “I ended up going to the England Northern Qualifiers in April 2019 before competing in England’s Strongest Women in May.

“I came fifth in the European Championships and was asked to go to the worlds in America.”

“I’d be over the moon if I could make top 10.

“I was buzzing to get top five at Europe so if I made it to the top 10 in the world I’d probably have a bit of a cry,”

Due to the fact she has only been competing for a short period of time, Miss Haigh is having to self fund her training and competitions.

She has set up a GoFundMe page in an effort to raise money for the competition entry fee as well as the cost of flights to Florida and a hotel whilst she’s there.

She is aiming to raise £1,500 and has promised to donate any extra funds to Mind in Furness and St Mary’s Hospice.
