A MAJOR Barrow road is planned to be shut to allow for bridge inspection works.

Cumbria County Council is to shut the A5087 The Strand on August 21 for one day from 10am to 1pm to enable the council to carry out bridge inspections.

A spokesperson from Cumbria County Council said: “The council is currently planning a repair scheme for the bridge carrying Michaelson Road over The Strand.

“This is currently in the planning stage, and the works are due to be undertaken in this financial year.

“In preparation for works getting underway on site, we are undertaking monitoring inspections of previously identified defects at four weekly intervals.

“This is to ensure the continued safe passage of highway users below the bridge.

“To undertake the monitoring inspections we have to close The Strand for safety reasons.

“The closure on August 21 is the next planned inspection date.”

A diversion will be clearly signposted.
