A HOST of new homes could be set to arrive in a village.

A housing developer has submitted proposals to council planners for 29 new homes in Askam.

They would consist of three and four-bed properties including bungalows and two-storey homes at a site in Lots Road.

Askam could be set for an influx of housing after plans for 46 homes in James Street in the village were also submitted last month.

There is also another potential housing development at land between Sharp Street and Beach Street, although no application has bee made at this time.

Harry Barker, the chairman of Askam and Ireleth Parish Council, said: “Some people will like new houses coming in, some people will loathe it.”

Consultant engineers M & P Gasden, based in Barrow, have submitted a planning application for consideration to Barrow Borough Council on behalf on the Ulverston-based MT Wood and Sons for the Lots Road site.

The site is described as ‘vacant greenfield land’ currently used for grazing.

In a statement making up part of the application, applicants said: “It is our opinion that this a suitable and sustainable design of a residential development and responds well to the site and surrounding area.

“It meets all policy and standards and contributes to housing need in the borough.”

The application says steps will be made to protect and encourage wildlife on the site, with an area of wild flowers due to be planted on the south east corner of the site.

The plans say footways to the site will not be provided as there is ‘no existing infrastructure along Lots Road until you reach Askam Village School’.
