SINGERS Faye Bowness of Whassett, Gatebeck’s Rebecca Chandler and Helena Townsend of Scotby, near Carlisle, have landed places in the final of the prestigious Keldwyth Award.

The three voices join oboist Isabel Kent of Burgh-by-Sands on the Victoria Hall stage at Grange-over-Sands on Friday, August 30 (7.30pm) for the big final of the award, now in its 37th year.

The four were chosen from 12 talented young musicians who competed in the preliminary round at Kendal Town Hall.

Before announcing the judges’ decision, chairman Mary Powney congratulated all the entrants on the quality of their performances and the range of talents they had displayed. For each she had helpful words of encouragement. Sixteen-year-old guitarist Tom O’Neill of Wetheral was given the Best Newcomers Prize of £100.

The Keldwyth has a top prize of £1,000 and the Reg Griffiths Trophy for the overall winner. Runner up receives £500 and the Geoffrey Blake Trophy and there’s a further two prizes of £250.
