A MOTORIST has been arrested following an alleged police chase through the streets of Askam.

A teenager from Barrow has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and taking a vehicle without consent.

The 16-year-old was detained on the A595 road through Askam in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The vehicle, which was a silver MG, was followed by officers after the driver failed to stop for police on the A595.

This resulted in a pursuit by trained officers though Askam and onto the dirt tracts towards Roan Head.

The pursuit led to the vehicle going off track which resulted in a one-vehicle collision.

The four teenage passengers were admitted to Furness General Hospital where they sustained minor injuries.

The incident took place around the Askam area at 3.14am yesterday morning.

A police spokeswoman said: "The officers followed the vehicle, a silver MG, after it failed to stop for police on the A595.

"This resulted in a pursuit by trained officers though Askam and onto the dirt tracts towards Roan Head.

"The four passengers, four teenage males, were taken to Furness General Hospital with injuries believed to be minor.

"The incident occurred at 3.14am yesterday morning near Askam on the A595."

In an update posted on Twitter, Cumbria Roads Police said: "Five males were detained after a pursuit near Askam on the A595 which went off road and resulted in a collision.

"Too many offences to list but aggravated taking without consent and dangerous driving was the most serious.

"Thanks to Barrow Police for their top work too."
