Summer holidays are in full swing here at Safari Zoo.

For local residents visiting in August 2019, we are offering half price admission on production of a current Barrow Borough Council council tax bill.

We have two giraffe houses; one of which is on the older side of the site where Ekundayo and Kofi live.

Kofi is a nervous lad, especially around people he doesn’t know.

In late 2018 he lost his partner in crime Tibor after a long illness and Ekundayo moved over to join him. Their enclosure is one of the oldest in the zoo with an aged oil-based heating system which struggles to provide them with the required 18 degrees Celsius.

Giraffes are at risk of major injury if they slip and fall so their access to the outdoors has to be restricted during wet and icy weather.

Works on the redevelopment of their area have begun which will more than double the area and give them lots of space to roam.

Earlier this month Humboldt Haven sprung a leak.

On investigation it was plain to see that the foundations were not suitable to maintain a sizeable pond for any extended period so we added a sparkly new enclosure for the Humboldts to our (ever-growing) list of works needed.

A temporary repair was completed to enable the pond to hold a decent volume of water.

Following the sad news on Remi’s cancer diagnosis we have an update from the Jaguar enclosure where he lives with his mum Bonita.

Remi has had another operation and has recovered well. His scar is very noticeable but he’s eating fine and still trying to steal his mum’s dinner!

This lovely photo from Chris Haggan Photography captured the beautiful relationship and strong bond between Remi and his mum perfectly the morning after his operation.

Thank you to everyone for their kind words and well wishes for Remi, at a time like this is really means a lot to his keepers and the rest of the team here at Safari Zoo.
