AN inquest will take place this week after the death of a pensioner in Ulverston.

A hearing at Barrow Town Hall on Thursday will determine the facts surrounding the death of Arthur Wood, who was 82 and from Barrow.

Police cordoned off a section of Ulverston’s canal on December 8 after a body of a man in his eighties was discovered in the water.

Onlookers said police officers, fire crew and paramedics all attended the scene at Canal Head after being alerted just after 10am.

Officers, who were said to have been at the scene for around two hours, said at the time there appeared to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

Coroner Margaret Taylor will preside over the hearing, which is expected to last one hour.

An inquest into the death of Michael Doughty, 33, from Barrow, will also take place on the same day.

He died on February 17 this year.

The hearing is expected to last two hours.
