AN heroic bowls player said ‘it was meant to be’ after saving his friend’s life.

Edmond (Eddie) Harkins, 66, along with fellow bowler Allen Crighton, 71, both of Barrow, used CPR bringing grandad Keith Wilson, 77, ‘back to life’ on Barrow Island’s bowling green after suffering a suspected heart attack.

However, Mr Harkins revealed he was not supposed to be at that location during the incident on July 8.

Mr Harkins, who has been Mr Wilson’s friend for 20 years, said: “I’ve since spoken to Keith’s wife and she said he’s recovering well at Blackpool hospital.

“It’s great to hear he’s on the mend, because since that day the whole situation has been on my mind.

“On the day I was actually supposed to be playing West Shore Bowling Green and was only on Barrow Island by accident.

“I feel it was meant to be.”

Since beginning his recovery, Mr Harkins has kept in regular contact with his wife Willa Wilson.

“I’ve spoken to Willa and Keith’s other family members and they’ve informed me he’s had stents put into his heart and will be having a pacemaker fitted,” said Mr Harkins.

“I’ve only recently retired three months after working as an electrician in the shipyard.

“I was the designated first aider during my time at the shipyard.

“I believe my actions could have been a result of fate - it’s possible.

“It seems everything just came together.”

Mr Crighton, a former Barrow firefighter, said: “It’s wonderful news to hear Keith is doing better.

“I’ve known Keith for 25 years both professionally and personally.

“I bowl for West Shore bowling team on Walney and we were actually playing away at Barrow Island.

“During the bowling season I usually play against Keith two or three times a year.

“So, I’m looking forward to seeing him once he’s out of hospital.”

Mr Harkins also gave his best wishes to Mr Wilson.

“It was a strange day, but I’m so happy he’s still alive and cannot wait to see him.”
