TWO casualties were thrown from a speedboat after a crash in Walney Channel with another suffering spinal injuries.

At 5.09pm on Sunday two ambulances were called out after a small speedboat had overturned after hitting the shoreline in Walney Channel.

There was a multi-agency response to the incident with Furness and Millom Coastguard Rescue Teams and Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service also in attendance, including three fire engines from Barrow, Walney and Ulverston.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service station manager Roger Exley said: "The ambulance services were quite concerned and so we were called to assist in helping the casualties up the jetty.

"When we arrived at the scene we found one person with a nasty bash on the head and there was also concern for other neck and back injuries."

North West Ambulance service confirmed possible spinal injuries to one individual.

A swift water team from the fire service worked with paramedics to help remove the casualty suffering from back pain from the boat and it is believed that the other two were thrown out of the speedboat once it overturned.

Fire crews were there for around forty minutes.

Barrow lifeboat were also called to assist. The lifeboat proceeded north along Walney Channel at full speed and shortly after arriving at the scene, north of Jubilee Bridge, was advised by HM Coastguard that the speedboat was now ashore on the Ferry Pitchings and that all persons had been accounted for.
