Glassware from a Cumbrian company is gracing the "future of luxury mobility".

Glass designers, blowers and cutters at Cumbria Crystal, in Ulverston, spent about 10 months developing the crystal elements for Bentley's Exp 100 GT concept, which was unveiled last week.

The car is billed as the "physical embodiment of the Bentley brand" and is both autonomous and electric, with a range of 700km.

The car also features artificial intelligence in the form of the Bentley Personal Assistant AI, which changes the environment inside to fit the mood of driver and passengers.

Cumbria Crystal designed and made the "interfaces" which house the technology.

"The Bentley Personal Assistant is a centre piece of the main console and visualised using illuminated crystal from Cumbria, England," Bentley's official write up of the car said.

"Interaction with the AI is made through hand gestures made to the front or rear Cumbria Crystal interfaces that intuitively interpret the commands."

Chris Blade, managing director of Cumbria Crystal, said: "It's almost like a sculpture, which lights up.

"It's a major endorsement of a local company and it is going to feature prominently."

In 2017 Cumbria Crystal was awarded an exclusive contract by Bentley to produce luxury crystal champagne flutes for the new Bentayga Mulliner.

It also made crystal for the launch of the Continental GT and Tumbler and Decanter sets for the WO limited edition Mulsanne.

"Use of of glass and light is becoming a major element for the designers at Bentley," said Chris.

"We've seen a massive resurgence in interest in real craftsmanship."

Chris said he hoped the relationship with Bentley would help sustain the business long into the future.

"It could support this company and create new jobs," he said.

The Bentley Exp 100 was revealed on Wednesday to coincide with the car company's 100th birthday and "reimagines the Grand Tourer for the world of 2035".

Director of design Stefan Sielaff said: “It represents the kind of cars we want to make in the future.

"Like those iconic Bentleys of the past, this car connects with its passengers’ emotions and helps them experience and safeguard the memories of the really extraordinary journeys they take.”
