FANS of a popular Ulverston restaurant said they 'will miss it' after a shock announcement that it was due to close.

Bosses at The Square, in Market Place, announced yesterday that it had closed its doors for the final time after being open for the less than a year.

The steak and seafood restaurant opened in October last year and is owned by the team that runs Bettula’s, another restaurant in Ulverston town centre.

A statement from the restaurant on social media said: “The Square is now closed. Thank you for those friends and customers who have been so supportive, and we look forward welcoming you at Betulla’s.”

Mayor of Ulverston Sharon Webster said she was saddened by the news.

“I’m quite shocked,” she said.

“It has not been open for very long and I thought it was up-and-coming place.

“I’ve been there a few times and had heard a lot of good things about it from people who had been.”

The restaurant follows the closure of Craig Sherrington’s Virginia House in March.

Accounts revealed Mr Sherrington’s award winning eatery was tens of thousands of pounds in debt and the mayor said she was saddened to see another establishment shut down.

Mrs Webster added: “It’s sad another restaurant has closed.

“It’s another empty building in the town.”

Managers at The Square refused to comment further when approached by The Mail.
