A GRANDMOTHER has spoken of her ‘shock’ after realising she had been scammed out of hundreds of pounds by rogue builders.

An 87-year-old woman has described how confidence tricksters agreed to complete work on her back yard, but after having been paid £300, they never turned up to complete the work.

The grandma, who lives on Sutherland Street, said that the builders had told her they had already done work for one of her neighbours and they agreed the work would be completed on Thursday June 20, but they failed to turn up.

She said that after two days she tried to get in contact with the company but never heard back.

Once she suspected something was wrong, she spoke to her neighbour who said the builders had told him they had started the work and asked for some of the money in advance.

But when he checked the work hadn’t been done.

She described the shock of realising what had happened, she said: “You would never have guessed that’s what they were going to do.

“They were well dressed and really nice.

“They weren’t pushy at all otherwise I would’ve questioned it.

“They were charmers, that’s how they get away with it.”

She went on to say how losing the money affected her.

She said: “That money was going to go towards fixing up the carpet and kitchen.”

The woman confirmed that she has reported the incident to police and has since relayed further details of what happened to officers.
