THIS Saturday is Lindal's traditional village gala and to mark the event we present a selection of pictures from events held in the1990s.

The gala begins at 1.50pm this year with a procession starting from St Peter's Church and making its way to a series of stalls and field events on the village green.

There will be a fancy dress contest, the Lindal Mile for runners and music from Dalton Town Band.

This year's Lindal gala queen is Grace Heap, a pupil at Lindal and Marton Primary School.

Musician Sarah Thompson put her cornet to one side 25years ago as the Dalton Town Band member wore her crown as gala queen at Lindal.

The Mail, on Monday June 27 in 1994, noted: "The sun didn't shine much for a weekend on June but beneath the spreading chestnut trees on Lindal green the crowds turned out in force for the village's annual gala.

"The main event of the afternoon was the crowning of gala queen Sarah Thompson, 11, who takes over from retiring queen Anna Ferguson.

"The queen's retinue left the Buccleuch Hall at1.40pm and marched around the green to the accompaniment of Dalton Town Band for the crowning ceremony at 2pm.

"Vicar Simon Rudkin was the target for wet sponges after volunteering to stick his head through a placard painted with a man in a G-string.

"Then there was a fancy dress competition for the under-fives and another for older children.

"There were sporting events for the children on the village green, a maypole and country dance exhibition by the pupils of Lindal and Marton Primary  School and strawberry teas with home-made scones in the Buccleuch Hall."

One of the St Peter's Church organising team, Mary Barton, said: "It was a splendid day.

"This is our main fundraising event of the year and we did very well."

In 1993 the gala queen was Anna Ferguson who took over from retiring queen Tina Thompson.

Events that year included a bonny baby contest and a tug-of-war competition.

In 1993 the queen was Aileen Wood and fancy dress competitors included three-year-old Christopher Ridyard as Robin Hood -complete with bow and suction-cup arrows.
