A TEENAGER was caught fighting with a knuckleduster at a college social event in Barrow.

Brandon Turner, of Eskdale Drive in Dalton, had been out with college friends at an event at Cloud 9 in Dalkeith Street on December 13 of last year.

The 18-year-old, who was 17 at the time, was spotted fighting with another male youth by doorman Kevin Nicholson.

When Mr Nicholson ran over to split up the pair he noticed Turner had a black knuckleduster on his hand.

The bouncer then confiscated the knuckleduster before restraining Turner until police arrived and arrested him.

Pam Ward, prosecuting at South Cumbria Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, said: "The defendant had been at a college social event at Cloud 9 from 8pm on December 13.

"After it ended at 12.15am the defendant was outside the venue with some other young people.

"Doorman Kevin Nicholson heard a commotion and heard shouting and saw the defendant and another male exchanging blows.

"He noticed the defendant had a black knuckleduster on his hand.

"He took it off him and the defendant was restrained."

When Turner was interviewed by police he refused to make any comment.

Defence solicitor Mike Graham offered no mitigation as he was aware the case would be sent to the crown court for sentencing.

Magistrates decided their sentencing powers were not sufficient.

Turner will next appear at Preston Crown Court on July 19 to be sentenced.
