A REPUTATION for putting on spectacular events has been well earned by Ulverston through the years and in this set of images from The Mail's archive we turn the clock back to 1999 when an unusual street race helped bring in the crowds for a comedy festival.
The Mail, on Monday, June 14, noted that the town had witnessed what was claimed to be the world's biggest line-up of racing pantomime horses.
Prizes were won by teams from Ulverston's Welcome Inn and the Braddylls but the big race of the day - the Ulverston Derby - was won by a panto horse entered by the Grapes.
Other events at the weekend of mirth included a Welly-wonder event and a Poem and a Pint evening at the King's Arms.
Street entertainers included Big Rory from Glasgow, circus acts, clog dancers and the Furness Morris Men.
