Barrow councillors agreed a raft of measures worth £30,000 to help town centre businesses during the credit crunch. They also decided against a suggestion for a "buy one hour and get one free" promotion on the Emlyn Street car park.

Approval was given for a two storey extension at Waterside Hose, in Bridge Approach, Barrow, to provide 16 office units and a meeting room.

Larking Racing hoped to set up a new bookmakers at the old Global store in Dalton Road, Barrow.

A semi-detached house in Blackbutts Lane, Walney, was offered for sale at £139,500. A terraced house in Rawlinson Street, Barrow, was £72,000.

Former Olympic runner Chris Brasher launched an Invest in the Lakes project to boost conservation work at an event held at the Brockhole National Park Visitor Centre, Windermere.

A terraced house at Church Street, Barrow, was offered for sale at £29,500. A bungalow at Solway Drive, Walney, was £32,750.

Furness cyclists Anne Plant and Caroline Alexander were picked to represent Great Britain in the 445km Tour of Portugal.

The Ripon Cathedral Choir gave a concert at St James' Church, Barrow. None of the performers was aged over 13 years.

50 YEARS AGO

Barbara Hutton, of Gloucester Street, Barrow, was back in town on holiday after working at a children's hospital in Saigon. She used to work at Barrow's Devonshire Road Hospital.

A collection of watercolours worth £14,000 from the Victoria and Albert Museum at London was to feature in the 16 th annual art exhibition at Barrow Town Hall by Barrow Society of Artists.

A new semi-detached house with three bedrooms on the Croftlands Park estate at Ulverston was offered for sale at £3,395.
