A MAN accused of murdering his own dad has appeared in court.

Jonathan Phillip MacMillan was brought to South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court from Barrow Police Station wearing police-issued grey tracksuit bottoms and matching tracksuit top.

The 28-year-old is accused of murdering Barrow taxi driver John MacMillan, 70, on Tuesday at the alleged victim’s home in Provincial Street, Barrow.

The murder suspect is understood to be the son of the victim.

MacMillan, represented in court by Liz Fazackerly, confirmed his name and date of birth as he stood in the dock wearing handcuffs and flanked by a security officer.

Two men and a woman sat in the public gallery during the court hearing.

Crown Prosecution Service solicitor Peter Kelly made only a brief address to the court in which he explained the proceedings with regards to a murder charge.

MacMillan was remanded in custody until Monday when he will appear at Preston Crown Court.

Meanwhile detectives are continuing their investigation into the alleged murder.

A cordon was still in place at 3pm yesterday at either end of Provincial Street.

Crime Scene Investigation officers have been carrying out extensive searches of the surrounding area.

Forensic units were also spotted at FCC’s waste processing facility in Walney Road, Barrow.

An FCC environment spokesman confirmed the company had helped police with their enquiries on Thursday but was unable to comment further as it is an ongoing investigation.
