SUPERMARKET chain Sainsbury's is now delivering groceries in Barrow from its Kendal store.

The third largest grocery chain has never extended home delivery past Ulverston but is now offering the facility in Barrow and Walney.

Sainsbury's home delivery service covers 98 per cent of the UK.

The retailer has in the past made attempts to open stores in Ulverston and Barrow.

In 2013 South Lakeland District Council rejected an out-of-town Sainsbury's in Ulverston.

Planning officials advised against proposals for the site, off the A590 towards Swarthmoor, because it was a piece of greenfield land earmarked for industry rather than retail.

That site has since been developed and the Beehive is set to open in Spring 2020 and will include a Marks & Spencer Food hall along with other tenants including a vet's.

Sainsbury's has also previously expressed an interest in opening a Local store in Barrow.
