THE spectacular growth of a mining town in the middle years of the 19th century will feature in a talk to a Furness historical society. Stephe Cove will look at Millom, the Growth of a Victorian New Town from 1860 to 1870 for members and visitors to Askam and Ireleth History Group on June 20. The illustrated talk starts at 7.30pm in the Duddon Road Methodist Church, Askam. Admission is £2. Millom’s rapid rate of growth - based on the discovery of iron ore and a availability of a railway link to reach customers beyond the immediate locality - had many similarities with the experience in Victorian Askam.
