A Whitehaven couple have created an innovative mobile app to showcase everything the town has to offer.

Trish and Keith McWhan who run Buzy Bee Software Services have designed the Whitehaven Appsolutely app to benefit locals and visitors.

They describe it as a “mobile pocket guide” to Whitehaven and the surrounding areas.

Mrs McWhan said: “I’m born and bred Whitehaven so wanted to do it to benefit the town. We have had so much good feedback.”

The free app covers everything from entertainment, food, shopping, health, education, transport, parking, charities and tourist information.

It was born following the couple’s desire to help local charitable organisations raise awareness of their services.

Mrs McWhan, who has MS, Crohn’s and Trigeminal Neuralgia, believed an app would be a faster and more interactive way for charities to provide information.

She said: “When I got diagnosed I struggled to find information on charities. That’s where the driving force came from.”

The couple, who live at Kells, also wanted to support local businesses and organisations by offering a free listing and an inexpensive upgrade.

Mrs McWhan said: “Slowly but surely people are starting to hear about it. All of a sudden we are getting 15 downloads a week. People are realising the app is going to be beneficial to our town.

“We have got so much in the area that people aren’t aware of. It’s bringing people into the town.”

When the app is first installed the content is downloaded so it will be available even when users have no internet connection.

There is also a free alert notification service for emergency information bulletins.
