Poor weather hit Whitehaven’s first event in its programme of summer activities.

The family fun day in St Nicholas’ Gardens was cut short but organisers said the event was still a success despite the high winds and pouring rain.

Lego building, model train sets, magic tricks and face painting all featured as part of the fun.

Prizes were awarded for the best models, which had been donated by Wilkos and Airfix.

Whitehaven Town Council has organised a host of family activities which will take place in the town this summer.

Local businessman Gerard Richardson MBE, has been working alongside the town council to help bring the events to life.

Graham Roberts, who represents the Harras ward on Whitehaven Town Council said: “The whole event was fantastic. The weather was a little off-putting. Quite a few people won prizes.

"The magician was very upbeat about it and the people who brought the model trains thought it was a beautiful setting.

“It’s something fresh and it’s something new and we are very pleased about it. The youngsters really enjoyed it.

“Apart from the hiccups it went really well. We can’t second guess the weather.”

Carl Walmsley, who represents Mirehouse on the town council, said: “My son loved it.

"I think the events organised by the town council are fantastic.

“The events group work incredibly hard to give our town’s people something to do as a family in their own town.

“We have other themed days already announced and are already discussing and working on some more bigger events.

“It’s a real shame about the weather - it literally put a bit of a dampener on the day but those who braved the weather really enjoyed it.

“I’d like to personally thank my fellow town councillors on the events committee and Gerrard Richardson who has been instrumental in these plans.”

A window dressing competition, a photographic exhibition and competition, and a paper aeroplane contest will also feature as part of the town council’s plans to entice people back into the town centre and showcase St Nicholas’ Gardens.
