FORMER WBC world light-heavyweight boxing champion John Conteh was the guest speaker at the Ulverston boxing dinner held in 1999.
The Mail on Monday, November 8, noted that he was at the Coronation Hall for the first fight night held at the venue in 25 years.
The event was organised by a group of Furness boxing enthusiasts and Dave Reynold of Ambleside Amateur Boxing Club.
A Cumbria select group of boxers, which included young fighters from Ambleside, Workington and Whitehaven, faced a group from Ireland .
The article noted: "Mr Conteh watched the 10 bouts with enthusiasm, carefully marking each match and then comparing his decision with that of the judges - and the opinions were rarely different."
