A CROWD of more than 1,500 people turned out in 2003 to watch the It’s A Knockout Competition at the Wilson Park, Haverigg, ground of Millom Rugby Union Club.

The quirky events – where everyone got wet or covered in soap suds – were held to raise cash for the club, local good causes and to help support the village soccer team, Haverigg United.

Rugby club chairman Paul Slater said: “Everybody I spoke to said it was the best day they’ve had this year.

The crowds were able to watch nine teams, each with 10 members, battle it out in the fun competition.

The Mail, on June 27, noted: “Among the games were team relay events that needed plenty of concentration and races over obstacles – with plenty of soap suds making things quite tricky.”
