A BARROW woman has appeared in court accused of a racially and religiously motivated public order offence.

Karen Nicola Johnson, of Maple Street, pleaded guilty to the offence when she appeared at South Cumbria Magistrates' Court this week.

The court heard how the 40-year-old had used threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour towards Gary Hutton causing him harassment, alarm or distress.

The incident happened on November 30 of 2017 in Lancaster.

After hearing the circumstances of the offence magistrates agreed the incident had been both racially and religiously motivated.

Johnson, represented in court by Trystan Roberts, was fined £140 for the offence.

She was also ordered to pay a £30 victim surcharge and £50 towards court costs.

Magistrates made an order allowing Johnson to pay the £220 total at a rate of £20 per month.
