The Women’s World Cup might just be around the corner but the game’s future stars have been out in force at Pulse Soccer with the Barrow Schools’ seven-a-side league kicking off last Thursday.

Following a superb breakthrough season for Barrow’s own PFA Women’s Young Player of the Year Georgia Stanway, girl’s football in the Furness area is on a rapid rise.

The pupils of Chetwynde, Holy Family, Ormsgill, Roose, St James and Yarlside produced some great football to start the league with a bang.

It was Yarlside who got off to the best start, with three wins from three seeing them to the top the division.

They began with a 3-0 win over Holy Family, before a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Chetwynde and a 5-0 defeat of Roose cemented the summit for now.

Holy Family bounced back from losing their opening game to claim three points in each of their last two matches.

They first swept aside Roose 3-0 before edging past Ormsgill 2-1, meaning they sit in second after their strong recovery.

The two defeats against Yarlside and Holy Family, along with a 5-0 heavy loss against Chetwynde had Roose in some trouble, but a 3-2 victory over St James gave them a huge boost.

The other game of the afternoon was the closest game of all between Ormsgill and St James, who both suffered narrow defeats in their only other games.

A 2-2 draw between them meant all teams competing got at least a point from the opening day, with Askam set to join the division when the fixtures resume on June 13.
