A SKIP left on an estate for homeowners to dispose of large pieces of rubbish is now overflowing - after people from elsewhere began to dump their waste in it.

Residents who live on Greenhill Close in Ormsgill, Barrow, have complained about people from other areas leaving their rubbish in the skip, which was left by Barrow Council to allow residents to get rid of any bulky rubbish.

Council letters explained the skip would be left in the estate on last Wednesday between 10am and 4pm.

Residents have been able to dispose of any large pieces of rubbish which would be otherwise difficult to move.

However, the skip was never taken away and now people from the surrounding area have been started to bring their rubbish on to the estate.

The skip is now overflowing and items are being left in the street.

One resident said: “I think the skip is a good idea, but it needs to be taken away now.

“It filled up within the first day and now other people have been bringing waste from elsewhere and leaving it.”

Another said: “I think the skip is a brilliant idea.

“It saves people having to go all the way to the dump and means rubbish is there rather than everywhere else.

“But the letter said it would only be there for the day and it’s been here for almost a week now.”

Ormsgill councillor Bill McEwan said he would contact the relevant authorities to get the skip taken away.

He also discouraged Ormsgill residents from outside Greenhill Close from using the skip.

He said: “Residents in Greenhill Close asked for a skip so we got one for them.

“In the past we have agreed the skip would be left for a week, but that clearly wasn’t the case this time.

“I will make enquiries and get it taken away.

“It isn’t right that other people are using it though.

“Residents in other areas should hang fire and get in contact if they think they need their own skip and we can get them one.”
