CROWDS were drawn to a village green for a race involving more than a thousand rubber ducks.

On a sunny day, eager racers went head to head for the Gleaston duck race, hosted by Barrow Rotary Club.

In his penultimate activity before he relinquished his role as mayor of Barrow, Cllr Bill McEwan blasted the air horn and then helped pour 1,400 plastic ducks into the Gleaston beck.

It signalled frantic activity as spectators struggled to get a good view as the ducks made the 100 yards downstream – and Walney Scouts and some local youngsters put ducks caught up in the reeds back into the race.

Finishing judge Graham Parker was tasked with picking out winner.

Owner Ged Pugh scooped the £100 prize with duck number 983 the clear winner from the field.

It was closer for second place as duck 63 won £50 for Alex Grainger, just ahead of duck 308 which netted £25 for Harry Lovell.

Other attractions on the day included a vintage Rolls Royce on display, a car boot sale and a donuts van, a book stall and a refreshments stall.

The event was said to have raised more than £800 for Barrow Rotary to use towards helping good local causes.

Rotary club president Dave Simm reflected on a successful day.

He said: “It was a great day.

“We thank all who bought ducks and all who turned up on the day to join in the fun.”

Cllr McEwan said he enjoyed being at the centre of the action - even if his duck sank.

He said: “It was a pleasure for myself and the mayoress to be invited along by the Rotary club, along with the Walney Scouts to start their annual duck race.

“A great crowd turned up on a lovely sunny afternoon on the green to cheer on the ducks

“It was a great family and community event and a really enjoyable afternoon.

“It was a privilege for myself and the mayoress to be part of a great community event.

“Well done the rotary club for putting such a great event on.”

The event followed another annual duck race held by Grizeback Hall last month.
