POLICE were last night investigating a "shocking" sexual assault in Barrow park.

Officers said the incident happened in the early hours of yesterday morning.

A cordon was in place yesterday by the Life Leisure car park on the Greengate Street side of the park, with officers seen keeping guard at either side.

The victim, described as a woman in her 20s from the local area, was said to be receiving support from officers.

A community leader described the incident as "horrendous news" and offered his sympathies to the victim.

Police thanked the victim for coming forward to report the incident and detectives are appealing for witness to help in their investigations.

A police spokesman said: “I would like to thank the victim for her bravery in coming forward.

"We have specialist officers and detectives investigating this incident and they are actively following multiple lines of enquiry.

“There will be an increased patrol in the area for the foreseeable future while investigations are carried out.”

Reacting to the incident, Barrow mayor Bill McEwan described it as "shocking and horrendous news".

Mr McEwan said: "You think it would happen anywhere but in our town.

"It's not something you would ever expect to happen in Barrow.

"I hope the victim is safe and well and my heart goes to her and her family.

"It's something that could stay with her for a long time.

"It's terrible for the young lady."

Police pleaded for potential witnesses to come forward.
