THE new mayor of Millom said 'works starts now' as she was sworn into office.

Millom Town Council voted unanimously to choose Angela Dixon for the 2019-2020 term.

Mrs Dixon, who was the deputy mayor and is as councillor for the Newtown ward, was sworn in to the mayorship on Wednesday evening at Millom’s Council Chambers, on St George’s Road.

As part of her new role, the new mayor highlighted the need to help both Millom and Haverigg.

Mayor Dixon said: “Thank you to my fellow councillors for voting for me, but work starts now. We must look at the bigger picture for both Millom and Haverigg.

Former mayor Jane Micklethwaite thanked her then-deputy mayor for the work they achieved tduring the 2018-2019 term.

Mrs Micklethwaite said: “Thank you Angela, you have been a great deputy and I feel we have bonded during our time together.”

The meeting also saw Ruth Peter voted in as the new deputy mayor.

Mrs Peter, who is also a councillor for the Newtown area, will help the new mayor as the town’s second-ranking official.
