AS Furness grew in wealth and importance during the Victorian era, church building new churches and the provision of magnificent stained glass windows provided a way for communities to show the world how well they had done.
The History of Kirkby Group takes a look at the history of stained glass in Cumbria at its next meeting on Tuesday June 18.
Sarah Lace is the speaker and history group members and visitors should go to the village hall, at Beckside, Kirkby, for 2pm. All are welcome. Admission is £1.
Some historic county churches retain pictorial windows made from coloured glass of the medieval era and many more have continued the craft tradition by commissioning stained glass windows in the modern era – such as the Norman Nicholson window at St George’s Church in Millom.
