HOW people lived in the past provides endless opportunities for South Cumbrian youngsters to try out costumes and have fun while learning about our history.

Back in March 2002, pupils and teachers at Croftlands Infant and Nursery School, in Oakwood Drive, Ulverston, held a Victorian day.

Boys got to try out braces, waistcoats and cloth caps while the girls wore dresses with lace collars, mop caps and white pinnies.

The Victorian era in Ulverston and Furness had introduced compulsory education at new council-funded “Board Schools”.

They supplemented a patchwork of private and religious schools – some dating back hundreds of years in places like Urswick and Ireleth.

Nursery education was given a big boost by both world wars as women workers were needed to make munitions and fill what were traditional male roles as men volunteered or were conscripted into military service.
