A Cumbrian tourist attraction has partnered with two artisan businesses to create a pair of bespoke wheelchairs for guests.

The Langdale Estate, which is home to Brimstone Hotel, Brimstone Spa, Langdale Hotel and Stove restaurant, has joined forces with Herdwick fabric company Cable & Blake and cabinet maker Cat’s Paw to customise the unique wheelchairs, which are free for guests to use during their stay.

Cable & Blake creates and sells locally produced Herdwick fabrics, sourced from Cumbrian farms and woven on traditional looms in the Yorkshire Dales. The company, which is based in Kendal, created a soft Herdwick fabric that was used to upholster the chairs.

Cat’s Paw, based in Broughton-in-Furness, is owned and run by cabinet maker Tim Challis, who made arm rests and brake handles for the wheelchairs, using locally sourced, sustainable English hardwoods.

Nick Lancaster, managing director of Langdale Estate, said: “We want every element of the experience we offer for guests to be special and this obviously extends to the wheelchairs which we have for use on the estate.

“It has been great to collaborate with two Cumbrian companies, both exceptional at their craft and both of which make the most of local, sustainable materials. We are pleased with the wheelchairs, not only do they look wonderful, they offer the comfort rightly expected by our guests.”
