An ULVERSTON chip shop has reeled in the best chippy crown as voted for by The Mail readers.

Priory Plaice Fish and Chip Shop in Ulverston have landed the best chippy certificate, beating out dozens of competition.

Based on Priory Road, the family-run chip shop has been inundated with customers since its grand opening six months ago.

Managed by Tony Postlethwaite alongside Justin McMullen and sister-in-law, Sarah McMullen, the trio decided to fulfil their life-long ambitions and open a chip shop last December.

Mr Poslethwaite said: “We purpose built the shop in 2018 and we are delighted with it and think it looks amazing.

"We entered the industry during a really difficult time due to rising costs of fish and potatoes.

"A lot of fish and chip shops are struggling at the moment and it's important that local people support local businesses."

The trio said they were 'delighted' when they heard about their win, citing their customers as the main driver behind their success.

Mrs McMullen said: “We are absolutely delighted to win this award.

“All the customers have been coming in and asking about it.

“We’ve only been going a few months so this is a great achievement for us.

“We wouldn’t have been able to do it without the great support from customers, that’s what has kept us going all along.

“We want to support all other fish and chip shops too, it's not just about us."

Since opening, the shop has created seven new jobs as well as becoming a beloved part of the local community.

Mr Poslethwaite said: "Hopefully we are serving a purpose in the local community and the surrounding areas which is really important to us.

"As we grow we would like to expand the menu and offer gluten-free nights to cater for people with all dietary requirements."

The team are being assessed by the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) next week.

If successful, they will be recognised as a 'top quality' fish and chip shop.
