CHILDREN from an Askam school have been learning about martial arts.

Year six children from Askam Village School have been learning Taekwondo in PE Class.

Mrs Thornton from Dowdales School came to the school for the first lesson last week and has been teaching the children Taekwondo techniques.

This is one of six sessions.

Mrs Thornton used to compete in Taekwondo at a high level and is now teaching the children at Askam about the martial art.

Stephen Cairns, year six teacher, talked about the lessons and how much the children have enjoyed learning Taekwondo.

He said: “As soon as I found out Mrs Thornton had performed at a high level I wanted to get her in to teach the children more about Taekwondo.

“As soon as the children found out about the success she had, they were awestruck.

"They couldn't wait for her to come and teach them.

“They have loved learning Taekwondo and one child even said that it was the best PE lesson ever.”
